Top 5 ways to get those candid/ lifestyle shots at your photoshoot:
If you have worked with me before, or have seen any of my work, you may know I take a variety of images- some are posed, but most have a candid/ lifestyle quality. For some images I am authentically able to “catch” my clients in a magical candid moment, but in Mini Sessions, waiting for candid moments can be tough to do when we are on a short time limit. However, I am not above trying to give every client that same lifestyle quality vibe- even when it’s directed!
Here are my top 5 ways I help my clients during their session to get some candid/ lifestyle shots:
- You don’t always have to look at the photographer. Contrary to what you may think, this is the best way to get amazing photos! Instead, look at your partner, child, or friend that might be joining you that day. Interacting with someone you know, brings out natural emotions! This also helps you forget that a photographer is there in the first place!
- Let me take care of you. It’s all under control- even in the chaos! Don’t worry about the photographer ‘missing’ moments. As a professional, I have the proper equipment to capture those special moments. Whether its an engagement session or a children’s session, I know which lenses are right for each individual session. Focus on whats going on around you, and what’s happening in the moment, and I’ll catch those cute kiddos running around. I love to help direct my clients the so you never have to feel like you know what to do or where to look, and I want you to feel relaxed and look as natural as possible, so you are in good hands, don’t worry!
- Speaking of hands- sometimes it helps to keep your hands occupied to take the pressure off. When I interview my clients in the pre-session planning consultation I find out about hobbies, interests, & comfort level with the camera and we discuss ideas for possible props for kids, and even adults. Many times I will bring some things to take the pressure off- a guitar or ukulele, bubbles to blow, a book to read your kids, flowers to hold, etc. or I’ll even suggest you bring your dog if you have one! I always have ideas to gibe you as many looks as possible and to help you have fun and stay relaxed!
- Just follow my lead. I know that photoshoots can be overwhelming, believe me- I don’t really ever feel comfortable in front of the camera either- which is why my main goal is to always be helping you feel comfortable the entire time. I never expect my clients to know what to do. How could you know? You can’t see what I see. Believe me- I have had my fair share of sessions where I was the subject and even though I am a photographer, I needed guidance myself, but was left feeling awkward. I vow to never do that to my people. I have no problem helping direct or guide you the entire time. I never want you to feel like you have to do any work at one of my sessions or feel like you’re standing awkwardly in front of my camera. I want you not only to feel comfortable, but I want you to have fun & not have to think about what you should be doing to get great photos! Relax, have fun & be assured I know how to give off a candid, lifestyle vibe while you look amazing & natural.
- Let’s chat! As I said before, one thing that I do that sets me apart is to make you feel comfortable before as well as during the session. When you hire me we set up a phone chat so I can give you some tips and tricks and we discuss ideas, but also, by the time your session rolls around, we are like old friends meeting up. I also encourage chatting at your session too- I want this to be as fun and relaxed as possible, not some stiff, and intimitating appointment. Not only am I genuinely interested in what you have to say, chatting gets your mind off of the fact that you are having your picture taken. I love finding more out about you and kids love telling me all of their favorite things, or funny stories. It’s so much fun for me as much as it helps you all to relax. The more relaxed you are, the easier it is to bring those magical candid moments out!
